It’s day 3 of training camp and the excitement level is high. The Red and Blue teams will play one final scrimmage before the preliminary cuts are made midday. Roughly a dozen players will head home as the remaining players are reformed into just two teams for three Red and White games. The first game will take place this afternoon at 3:45 PM with the final two tomorrow, wrapping up training camp.
Scrimmage 3 – Team Blue vs. Team Red
Team Red came into this morning’s scrimmage riding a high from their win over Team White while Team Blue was looking for redemption after their loss yesterday. Tensions were high with just one scrimmage left before preliminary cuts at noon.
Team Red tallied first when Jimmy Cusan capitalized on a turnover and took off on a breakaway. Witihin five minutes of the start of the game, Team Red was up 1-0. By midway through the period, Blue had tied things up. 2012 6th round pick Kelly Summers rifled one off the bar and in to beat Ken Appleby. Before the period ended, Blue took the lead by taking advantage of another opportunity. Brett stood up for a penalty shot and slipped one past Ken Appleby to give Blue a 2-1 lead. Team Red had a chance to even things up on the power play but couldn’t get it done before the buzzer.
It took another fifteen minutes of ice time before Team Red earned their next marker. Weaving his way past the Blue defenders, Lucas Lessio scored for Red to make it 2-2. Eager, not to be the only team without a win, Team Blue kept the pressure on. It finally paid off for them late in the period when Tyler Biggs put Blue ahead 3-2, scoring off a nice set up from 2012 1st round pick Michael Dal Colle.
Team Blue added three more for insurance in the dying minutes of the game. Corey Caruso padded the lead when he packed away a rebound for his second goal of the camp. That was followed by two empty netters in the final minute of play, first from Michael Dal Colle and the second from Chris Carlisle.
With Team Blue’s victory, each of the three teams walks away from the scrimmages with a win.

Game 1 – Team Red vs. Team White
Training camp picked up again this afternoon minus thirteen players after the three teams were reformed into two. Team Red and Team White took the ice for the first of three games, comprised of two thirty minute periods.
Both teams came out going on all cylinders, knowing that roster spots are on the line. The play was heated and hard hitting with chances on both sides, including a power play for Team White, but it took almost the whole period to see a goal on the score clock. 2011 12th round pick was the first to score, putting Team White on the board late in the first.
Things were just as tight in the second period. Red came close to tying it up when Matthew Hore took off on break away and tried a wrap around, but Justin Tugwell was right there on the post. White kept on the pressure too and Lucas Lessio rang the post on Daniel Altshuller, but it wasn’t until the dying seconds of the game that the score changed. Team Red pulled Altshuller for the extra attacker and almost suffered an empty net, but Matt Petgrave had stepped in to play net minder in his absence. The empty net cam eventually though when Lucas Lessio recovered the puck and put Team White up 2-0 to finish the game.
