The Generals completed a perfect weekend at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa on Sunday; they beat the 67’s 4-3 before a captive crowd of 4,866. Oshawa let their 3-1 lead slip away in the third, but Cole Cassels saved the day, scoring the winner with his second of the night. With the win, Oshawa enters the Christmas break on a 3 game winning streak. The Generals are also back in first place in the East Division.
Oshawa carried play in the first period, outshooting Ottawa 19-10. Still, the 67’s broke the ice, with Remy Giftopoulos solving Daniel Altshuller at 9:23. The left winger’s 13th was a wrist shot from the high slot, giving Ottawa a 1-0 lead.
The Generals struck back courtesy of the power play. Birthday boy Chris Carlisle extended his goal-scoring-streak to 3 games, beating Clint Windsor blocker side with a shot from the point. Carlisle’s 4th came at 16:30, tying the game at 1. Quite a weekend, considering Carlisle scored the Teddy-Bear-Toss goal in Friday’s game.
In the second, the Generals scored twice, seizing control of the game. Oshawa’s penalty-kill stepped up to start the frame, killing off successive 4-on-3 and 5-on-4 Ottawa advantages.
That opened the door for Cole Cassels, who gave the Generals the lead. Cassels cut to the middle, unloading his 7th through traffic at 9:36.
Scott Sabourin continued the momentum swing at 12:23. Fresh off a penalty kill, Sabourin one-timed his 15th on a pass from Michael Dal Colle, putting the Generals up 3-1. Oshawa headed into the third against a 67’s team that had not won this season when trailing after 40.
Ottawa stormed into the third, not content to enter the Christmas Break on a losing note. Finding an opening, Brendan Bell cashed in on a partial break, firing his 7th past Altshuller at 5:34.
Back within 1, the 67’s evened it up at 10:09. Scoring his second of the night, Giftopoulos buried a backhand deke past Altshuller, tying the game at 3.
Facing adversity, Oshawa answered the test at 14:06. Once again, it was Cassels coming to the rescue. Scoring on a second effort, Cassels buried his 8th just before being hooked down. Cassels’ second of the night proved to be the winner as Oshawa held on for the 4-3 win.
Cassels and Dal Colle picked up the first and third star selections.
Oshawa outshot Ottawa 44-33 in the win.
The Generals come back from the Christmas break on the road vs. the Mississauga Steelheads on Friday December 28th. Puck drops at 7:30 PM, and the game can be seen live on Rogers TV Durham.
The Generals return home on Sunday December 30th to take on the Owen Sound Attack at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa. Start time is 6:05 PM. Happy holidays from the Oshawa Generals, and we’ll see you on the 30th.
