The Oshawa Generals will take on the Barrie Colts tonight at 7:35 PM at the General Motors Centre. Tonight's game is presented by the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation. Keep an eye out for their Greenbelt trivia shootout during intermission.
The two teams are meeting for the first of four match ups this season. Last year they split the regular season series with the Generals taking the first and last meetings. Both teams come into tonight's game with a winning record, possessing the two longest winning streaks in the OHL, each at 5 games. The teams also share similar records; the Generals come in to tonight with a 6-1 record and the Colts, with an extra game played, are 6-2.
The Colts come to Oshawa tonight for their second game in a stretch of three games in three days. The Generals are starting their own three in three tonight.
The Generals are coming off a successful weekend, taking both of their two games. They faced off against the Kingston Frontenacs, taking the game 6-4 and took on the Belleville Bulls on Thanksgiving Monday, defeating them 4-3 in overtime. Michael Dal Colle had a 4 point weekend, tallying a goal and an assist in each game. He was named the second star of the game in Monday's contest against Belleville. Boone Jenner also extended his point streak to 7 games, totaling 8 goals and 8 assists in that time.
The Barrie Colts played last night, defeating the Saginaw Spirit 8-5. Barrie took a two goal lead within the first five minutes of the game and never gave it up. Their scoring came from five different players and four players and three point nights. Barrie took the first two stars of the game, the top honours going to Andreas Athanasiou and the second to Steven Beyers.
The General to keep an eye on tonight is Leaf's prospect Tyler Biggs. A power forward through and through, Tyler has provided the grit and toughness on the top line to compliment Boone Jenner and Michael Dal Colle. His hard work has paid off with the best goal streak in the OHL thus far, a 4 game streak where he scored 5 goals. The Loveland, Ohio native has put up 8 points in 7 games and racked up a plus/minus of +9. Though his goal streak was snapped on Monday, his productivity suggests it won't be long before he starts another.
Watch out for Barrie Colt Andreas Athanasiou. The 110th overall selection in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Andreas was selected in the 4th round by the Detroit Red Wings. The former London Knight, and OHL Champion with that team, is off to a great start with 10 points in 8 games. He scored his second career OHL hat trick last night, netting the first goal and the game winner, along with an insurance goal in the 8-5 victory. His first OHL hat trick came last season when he scored 4 goals against Owen Sound as London won 5-3.
The Generals take to the road to face the Belleville Bulls at 7:05 PM on Saturday. They will then return to home ice Sunday, October 14th to host the reigning OHL Champions, the London Knights. Generals alumni Michael Del Zotto will be dropping the puck at 6:05 PM.
